CliffyB: No Gears 2 For Windows
Fri, 29 Aug 2008 19:40:52 EDT
In an interview with IGN, Gears guru, Cliff Bleszinski declares:
Gears of War is a great franchise first and foremost for Xbox 360, and therefore we're focusing on that platform for Gears of War 2. We've decided we're not going to do a PC version this time around.
Goodbye Gears, alas we hardly knew ye. (thanks Kantham)

Gamer's Bill Of Rights
Fri, 29 Aug 2008 12:11:08 EDT
According to ShackNews, Stardock and Gas Powered Games have put together a Gamer's Bill of Rights that will likely have many PC gamers (and no doubt others) nodding in agreement. Great job guys!
Gamers shall have the right to return games that don't work with their computers for a full refund.
Gamers shall have the right to demand that games be released in a finished state.
Gamers shall have the right to expect meaningful updates after a game's release.
Gamers shall have the right to demand that download managers and updaters not force themselves to run or be forced to load in order to play a game.
Gamers shall have the right to expect that the minimum requirements for a game will mean that the game will adequately play on that computer.
Gamers shall have the right to expect that games won't install hidden drivers or other potentially harmful software without their express consent.
Gamers shall have the right to re-download the latest versions of the games they own at any time.
Gamers shall have the right to not be treated as potential criminals by developers or publishers.
Gamers shall have the right to demand that a single-player game not force them to be connected to the Internet every time they wish to play.
Gamers shall have the right that games which are installed to the hard drive shall not require a CD/DVD to remain in the drive to play.

Rod Fergusson On Gears 2
Fri, 29 Aug 2008 11:28:45 EDT
Gamasutra is featuring a very lengthy and interesting interview with Epic Games' Rod Fergusson, who dives into the development of Gears of War 2. The discussion includes everything from work flow to feature introduction. Here they talk about using characters to fulfill storytelling needs within the game:
Yeah, and we've worked hard to make sure that Marcus was the aspirational guy that was somewhat quiet, and introverted in a way, and that Dom -- you know, we designed Dom to be the voice of the player. So if the player is playing, and he goes, "What the hell is that?" Dom goes, "What the hell is that?", right?
So we wanted to project all of the player questions, and all the player sensibilities onto Dom; to make him the one asking all the questions that the player's asking, so they don't have to have that -- Marcus isn't questioning, and Marcus doesn't have the same uncertainty that the player has, so they'll be like, "Wow, he's really strong, and he knows what he's doing, and he's a badass," whereas you have Dom asking the questions.

Tim Sweeney Interview
Fri, 29 Aug 2008 11:10:03 EDT
Tim Sweeney talks to GameDaily about all things Unreal Engine 3, including the adoption of the engine for use in television and film. Interestingly, he also reveals that the engine is now up to 2 million lines of C++ code for the engine and 150,00 lines of UnrealScript.
The introduction of Unreal by Hollywood is really neat. They're actually creating backdrops to some TV shows using the engine. It's all done in real-time. We're starting to see this be adopted by movie production houses for films, which is crazy. When you look at the history of Hollywood they started out with extraordinarily powerful movie business tools that are heinously slow. On the other end, we have simpler and less powerful tools that are completely fast in real-time.

Nathillien Relaunch, DM-Naquadah Released
Thu, 28 Aug 2008 08:36:43 EDT
Nathillien has relaunched his website and simultaneously released DM-Naquadah for UT2004. Nathillien, of course, was responsible for three of the retail Onslaught levels as well as lots of great custom content. Both the level and the site look great!
I?ve been almost gone from UT community for few years now due the professional involvement in developing Stargate: Alliance and now Huxley. But I?m back now. For now I don?t have anything new as far UT3 goes except some ideas in my head which will be eventually realized through some of future Community Bonus Packs. But that doesn?t mean I don?t have something for UT2004 lovers. For them I have DM-Naquadah which I made few years back but never released it. Well, what?s the better occasion then site re-launch.

Mirror's Edge To Feature Time Attack Mode
Wed, 27 Aug 2008 17:07:57 EDT
Death-defying jumps, leaps of faith... and now time attacks. The news hit (courtesy of 1up) that you will be able to not only do time attacks, but also compete with others:
Producer Tom Ferrer explained to us that the time trial portions of Mirror's Edge will be "bite-sized and short so you can grind them and play them and get faster and faster. It's not like playing an entire level." Naturally, you'll be able to upload your fastest time for each section to online leaderboards, and you can even download ghost data that appears in the game as a stylish red silhouette showing how other people completed the task.

Sin City Original Developer Dropped; New Developers Unnamed
Wed, 27 Aug 2008 12:01:36 EDT
There's been scant little information on the UE3-powered Sin City game, based on Frank Miller's graphic novels, but one of the tidbits to surface today is that the original developers, Transmission Games, will no longer be developing the title. Instead, a new, currently unnamed studio, has taken the helm.
The Unreal Engine 3-powered title actually shifted development houses "quite a long time ago," a Red Mile representative informed GameSpot, though they offered no details on the current developer. "Transmission is focusing on Heroes Over Europe, which is quite an important title for us."
